What Is Biogas?
Biogas is a mixture of methane (50โ70%) and carbon dioxide (30โ50%) produced when organic material decomposes in the absence of oxygen (anaerobic digestion). It burns similarly to natural gas and can be used for cooking, heating, or generating electricity.
The feedstocks available to most homeowners include: food scraps, vegetable and fruit peels, grass clippings, chicken manure, cow manure, food processing waste (if available locally).
A well-designed small digester can produce 100โ500 liters of biogas per day from household organic waste โ enough to cook 1โ3 meals per day.
The Fixed-Dome Digester: Simplest DIY Design
The most practical DIY biogas digester for household scale is a floating-drum or fixed-dome design using plastic drums or tanks:
Simple floating-drum design (600L capacity):
- 220-gallon plastic stock tank or poly drum as the main digestion tank
- Smaller drum floating on top โ rises and falls with gas production, providing consistent pressure
- Inlet pipe: 4" PVC pipe entering near bottom for waste input
- Outlet pipe: 4" PVC overflow exit on opposite side (effluent exits as you add material)
- Gas outlet: 3/4" pipe at top of floating drum to stove or appliance
Total materials cost: $150โ400 depending on tank sourcing (used tanks significantly cheaper).
Feeding Your Digester
Consistent, correct feeding is the key to good biogas production:
- Best feedstocks: Vegetable kitchen scraps, fruit peels, cooked food waste, chicken or rabbit manure
- Avoid: Meat and fish (attracts pests, can upset digester balance), citrus in large quantities (too acidic), antibiotics-containing manure (kills bacteria)
- Mix with water: Chop or blend scraps, mix 1:1 with water before adding
- Temperature: Mesophilic digesters work best at 68โ104ยฐF. In cold climates, insulate the tank and use solar heat to maintain temperature
- Startup time: 2โ4 weeks before significant gas production begins as bacterial populations establish
Using Your Biogas
Biogas burns at slightly lower heat than natural gas but is usable in modified natural gas appliances:
- Cooking: Standard natural gas burners work with minor orifice enlargement (10โ20% larger)
- Lighting: Gas mantles work directly on biogas
- Electricity: Small gasoline generators can be converted to run on biogas (carburettor modification)
The digester effluent (the slurry that exits when you add material) is an excellent liquid fertilizer โ nitrogen-rich and pathogen-reduced. Apply directly to garden beds or compost pile.
Regulations and Safety
Small household biogas digesters generally fall under no specific regulation in most US jurisdictions โ they're agricultural/composting systems from a regulatory standpoint. However:
- Methane is flammable and can accumulate in enclosed spaces โ ensure gas lines and appliances are leak-free
- Don't store large volumes of compressed biogas โ use it as it's produced
- If connecting to a gas stove, have the conversion checked by a plumber
- In urban areas, check with local authorities before building
