Materials (cost: $15–40):
- 2 cardboard boxes (outer slightly larger than inner, 3" gap all around)
- Rigid foam insulation (2" thick, fits between boxes)
- Aluminum foil (for lining interior)
- Black spray paint (for interior bottom)
- Sheet of glass or polycarbonate for lid (from old picture frame or storm window)
- Aluminum foil-covered cardboard reflectors (adjustable flaps around lid)
Build steps:
- Cut foam to fill all gaps between outer and inner box
- Line interior of inner box with foil, glue-stick adhesive works well
- Paint interior bottom flat black
- Create foil-covered reflector flaps around the glass lid opening
- Seal all edges with foil tape
What Can You Cook in a Solar Oven?
At 250–350°F, you can cook almost anything given adequate time:
- Baked goods (bread, muffins, cookies): 2–3× conventional time
- Rice and grains: excellent results, similar time
- Beans and legumes: slow-cook beautifully, 3–5 hours
- Chicken, fish, vegetables: 1.5–3× conventional time
- Pasta dishes, casseroles: excellent results
- Water pasteurization: 149°F for 6 minutes kills all pathogens — critical for emergency water treatment
Tips for best results: Dark pots absorb more heat (use dark enamelware or cast iron). Smaller portions cook faster. Orient oven so glass faces directly toward sun; adjust every 30–45 minutes.
Upgrading to a Parabolic Solar Cooker
For cooking speed comparable to a conventional stove, a parabolic concentrating cooker reaches 400–700°F and can boil water in minutes:
- Build a parabola from a satellite dish (18"–36") lined with reflective Mylar film
- Focus point is small and intense — adjustable arm holds cooking pot at focal point
- Must be re-aimed every 10–15 minutes as sun moves
- Can fry, stir-fry, and boil rapidly
