Even a tiny trickle of water can generate useful electricity 24/7. This guide covers building a small Pelton wheel or propeller turbine from readily available materials for very low-flow streams.
Most micro-hydro guides focus on streams with substantial flow. But even a spring or trickle producing 3โ10 GPM with 15โ50 feet of head can generate 5โ50 watts continuously โ enough for lighting, small loads, or trickle-charging a battery bank.
The key insight: 10 watts of continuous 24/7 generation = 240 Wh/day = 87.6 kWh/year. A single solar panel produces 500โ700 kWh/year, but only during daylight and sunny weather. Your small stream never stops.
You need two measurements: head (vertical drop from intake to turbine) and flow (water volume per minute).
Measuring head: Use a surveying level, a hand level with a measuring rod, or a garden hose as a water level. Walk down your stream measuring the elevation drop every 10 feet. Total the drops from a potential intake point to your turbine location.
Measuring flow: Dam the stream temporarily and direct all flow into a 5-gallon bucket. Time how long it takes to fill. 5 gallons รท seconds ร 60 = gallons per minute.
Power calculation: Watts = Head (ft) ร Flow (GPM) ร 0.085
Example: 25 ft ร 5 GPM ร 0.085 = 10.6 watts continuous
The Pelton wheel is ideal for high-head, low-flow streams. A jet of water strikes spoon-shaped buckets on the wheel's rim, spinning it efficiently.
