What Does a Charge Controller Do?

The charge controller sits between your solar panels and battery bank. Its job is to regulate the voltage and current flowing from the panels to the batteries — preventing overcharging, which destroys batteries and creates fire hazards.

There are two technologies: PWM (Pulse Width Modulation) and MPPT (Maximum Power Point Tracking). They differ dramatically in efficiency and capability.

PWM: Simple, Cheap, Limited

PWM controllers work by directly connecting the panel to the battery and using rapid on/off switching to regulate charging voltage. They are simple, reliable, and inexpensive.

How it works: When batteries are full, the controller shorts the panel's output to regulate voltage. This wastes the panel's potential power.

Key limitation: PWM can only work efficiently when the panel voltage closely matches the battery voltage. A 24V panel charging a 12V battery through a PWM controller wastes the voltage difference as heat.

When PWM is fine: Systems under 200W, 12V systems where panel Vmp closely matches battery voltage, extreme budget constraints, or warm climates where MPPT efficiency gains are minimal.

MPPT: Efficient, Smart, Worth It

MPPT controllers continuously find the panel's "maximum power point" — the combination of voltage and current that extracts the most wattage — and convert it to the optimal charging voltage for your battery bank.

This voltage conversion (essentially a DC-DC buck converter) means a 48V string of panels can efficiently charge a 24V battery bank — something impossible with PWM.
