Solar Panel Wiring: Series vs Parallel vs Series-Parallel Explained

๐Ÿ“– Updated 2025  ยท  By I-Control-Energy.com

Learn how to wire solar panels correctly โ€” series, parallel, and series-parallel configurations explained with diagrams, voltage/current rules, and safety tips.

DC Wiring Basics for Solar

Solar panels produce direct current (DC) electricity. Unlike household AC wiring, DC wiring requires special attention to polarity, voltage levels, and the way panels are combined. Wiring panels incorrectly can damage your charge controller, inverter, or create dangerous conditions.

Every solar panel has two terminals: a positive (+) and a negative (โˆ’). How you connect multiple panels together determines the voltage and current your system produces.

Series Wiring: Voltages Add

Connect the positive terminal of one panel to the negative terminal of the next โ€” like batteries in a flashlight. Voltage adds; current stays the same.

Example: 3 ร— 400W panels each at 40V and 10A wired in series = 120V at 10A.

Parallel Wiring: Current Adds

Connect all positive terminals together and all negative terminals together. Current adds; voltage stays the same.

Example: 3 ร— 400W panels each at 40V and 10A wired in parallel = 40V at 30A.

Series-Parallel: The Best of Both

Most larger systems use a combination โ€” series strings combined in parallel. For example, four 400W panels wired 2S2P (2 in series, 2 parallel strings) produces 80V at 20A = 1,600W.

Rules for series-parallel wiring: All panels in a string must be identical (same wattage, same manufacturer if possible). Mixing panel specs in series causes the weaker panel to drag down output.

Wire Sizing & Overcurrent Protection

Always size wire conservatively. Use the NEC ampacity tables (Table 310.15) and derate for temperature and conduit fill.

System CurrentMin Wire GaugeMax Run (2% VD)
Up to 15A14 AWG~30 ft
Up to 20A12 AWG~40 ft
Up to 30A10 AWG~60 ft
Up to 50A8 AWG~80 ft

Every parallel string must have its own fuse or breaker rated at 125% of the string's short-circuit current (Isc). Never omit fuses on parallel strings โ€” reverse current from other strings can cause fire.

MC4 Connectors & Tools

Solar panels use MC4 connectors โ€” waterproof, UV-resistant push-lock connectors standard across the industry. To make custom cable runs, you need an MC4 crimping tool ($20โ€“60) and MC4 connector pairs.

โš ๏ธ Warning: Never disconnect MC4 connectors under load (while carrying current). Always de-energize the circuit first by covering panels or disconnecting at the charge controller/inverter.
